When you think about Jiu-Jitsu, skateboarding often doesn’t come to mind. It’s on the far end of the sports spectrum. But did you know they are both very similar sports?
Both involve overcoming challenges & pain, and getting back up & trying again.
In the jiu-jitsu culture, many are also into boarding sports, like skateboarding, snowboarding, and surfing.
Kron Gracie, the grandson of Hélio Gracie, is one of them. Skateboarding was his first love, but when your family is the first family of jiu-jitsu, the ties that bind are strong. He is well-known in both the skateboarding and the jiu-jitsu communities.
OAMA instructor Kyle Spanton is one of those who are passionate about both sports.
This guy loves painful activities!
This week get to know Kyle on Meet the Team.
Watch the full interview here.
Kyle started martial arts 10 years ago in Tae Kwon Do and then found his love in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
He credits martial arts in helping him become more confident and personable and breaking his shyness.
When asked why he likes training, he said, “Training is a place for me to express myself freely and I don’t have to worry about any of my other problems. Having a space to devote myself to is crucial…it’s a creative outlet where I am fully supported. BJJ is where I have the most fun. I can play and have space to be an artist.”
“Competition is scary and nerve-racking, but it’s one of the few times I feel I’m being tested to my full ability. It’s beneficial because it shows you where you’re at in your training, testing you at your full ability. And it shows you how you can face challenges and pressures,” Kyle said.
Kyle teaches OAMA’s children’s programs and loves it! He likes being able to give them confidence and a place where they feel comfortable and safe.
Our OAMA staff team is incredible!
They are all knowledgeable, helpful, easy to talk to, and passionate about martial arts. They love what they do and you can tell.
