In this week’s podcast interview, Professor Matt “Hammer” Hache sits down with Loubert Nicolas, one of OAMA’s newest instructors.
Loubert has been training in Muay Thai for 3 years and has 5 amateur fights under his belt.
His interest in martial arts was sparked early on when he would watch WWE wrestling with his cousins and they would try out the moves on each other. His interest grew and in high school he joined the wrestling team. Although he played other team sports like rugby and football, wrestling was the sport where he felt he was most tested and dedicated. A friend asked Loubert what he wanted to do when he got older, and he recalls saying “I want to be in the UFC one day.”
When Loubert first joined OAMA he travelled over an hour on the bus to get to the gym, because he loved how everyone at OAMA is there to help and offer assistance. “Everyone is so welcoming. They make you feel comfortable and not ashamed to ask ‘what’s a check call again?'”
From the moment he first walked into OAMA, he noticed the effort everyone put in, from the instructors to the students. “The hardest and most positive thing is going into the 6:15 pm class and staying for the 7:15 pm sparring class, to persevere and stay throughout and feel like you conquered the day. You see all the effort everyone puts in. Everyone is sweating. When you are at the front teaching and see all the effort everyone puts in, it’s amazing, they are all in the zone and not thinking of anything else, they all have energy, they are all determined”, he said.
Most people in martial arts are high achievers. Being with others who work hard makes you feel the need to continuously improve. And you are encouraged to keep growing and learning, by your instructors and teammates.
“A rising tide lifts all the boats”.
