Many people, young and old, participate in some form of martial arts. As the art grows in popularity, many are realizing the benefits. So why is martial arts important?
1. Self Defense
It goes without saying that training in a martial art betters your self-defense. It teaches many techniques you can use in real-life situations that you otherwise wouldn’t know how to protect yourself in. All the repeated drills make the moves second nature and you can act without thinking about it.
2. Confidence
Confidence is a common benefit of martial arts training. It can help you overcome shyness, learn how to carry yourself with more authority, be courageous, and help you be tenacious. At the dojo, you learn respect, discipline, cooperation, and humility. This is all part of gaining confidence and perfecting your art.
3. Focus and Awareness
While training, you have to be very aware of your movements and the people around you. You never know when that roundhouse is going to come at you! This broadening of awareness is important in life. It can help in school, work, and in your relationships.
4. Peacefulness and Mental Balance
You know the stereotype of the ancient martial arts master who never gets riled up, but calmly deflects the protagonist’s antics? Well, you don’t need to be a master to get this benefit from martial arts training. Martial artists of all levels report calmness and an inner fortitude against stressful situations.
5. Stress Relief
Any regular exercise is scientifically shown to relieve stress, but being able to get that exercise surrounded by a supportive community can go a long way for you to ease it. Many martial artists value their class time as a break from the stressors in their lives. And punching a bag just makes you feel 100 times better!
6. Health
Discipline and self-control are great reasons for children to participate in martial arts, but adults often experience similar benefits. It’s not unusual for a martial artist to credit his or her training with being able to quit smoking, recover from substance abuse, or eating healthier.
7. Motivation
Martial arts helps motivate you to want to do better and be better at a technique or drill. Training with your fellow members drives you to do better to achieve the next stripe or belt level. This motivation also helps you off the mats when trying to get better grades or get a promotion at work.
8. Community
Making friends with the people you train with is inevitable. Your fellow students and instructors end up being like family. Your instructor is more than just a teacher, they become a confidante and a mentor. Your friends at the dojo become part of your social circle, helping you through thick and thin.
Martial arts is one of the few sports that is all-encompassing. The lessons learned are ones you will carry forever. And the best part is having fun!
Not convinced yet? Come join a class, in person or online, and see the benefits of Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! We offer many classes, for all ages and experience levels. We are so thrilled to be back at it and have put in safety measures for everyone. Looking forward to seeing you!
