“The instructors exhibit a very high degree of professionalism. They approach both beginner and advanced classes with the same level of enthusiasm and concern.”

I cannot say enough about the positive experiences that my family and I have had at the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts.
We felt welcome right from our very first visit. My children were somewhat scared about beginning something new. However, when we walked through the doors of the academy for the first time, we were greeted promptly and with a smile from all of the staff. This made my children feel at ease and a sense that they were a part of a team right from the very beginning. Their first class was a big success and they have continued to enjoy the classes ever since.
The main emphasis for the kids is having fun, while learning the basics of martial arts. The Dojo Kun is something that we should all follow and it is the guiding principles for the children at the academy. My children always begin and end class with smiles on their faces. They are rewarded for doing their best and they in no way feel that they are competing with other students. They do feel a sense of pride as they earn their stripes, but it is personal satisfaction. They are not trying to show anyone else up. They are working hard to achieve a personal best.
I too have greatly enjoyed my experiences at the academy. I have trained Muay Thai for two years now. At first, I was also apprehensive about beginning something new. I grew up playing many different sports, but I must tell you, I have never felt anything like the sense of family and belonging that I have felt at the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts. The Kru’s and Sensei’s are all first class individuals and their interactions with people are what make these instructors so special. They are always there to answer questions and to help me improve and learn about martial arts. The classes are always fun and challenging and filled with a variety of learning experiences. I never feel worried about making mistakes or looking out of place because the instructors have created an environment that emphasizes helping each other. New students are always being mentored by the more veteran students. I never feel any pressure to compete. The instructors are there to support me in my learning and devote just as much time to me as they would the fighters.
I would highly recommend the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts to anyone who wishes to venture into the world of martial arts. As an elementary school teacher and a father, I think the staff at the academy offers a first class learning experience.

When I first moved to Ottawa I was looking for a place to train Muay Thai. I called a few different places and OAMA was definitely the most welcoming and enthusiastic. When I first arrived to try a class I was impressed by their professionalism, passion and the flexible class schedule.
After my first class I was asked about my goals for training and thought that this personal attention would disappear after I signed the contract. I was wrong. Each instructor understands my goals and pushes me to my personal limits. But it’s not only the staff that push you; all the students help each other. More advanced students are always eager to help, without judgement; even if you are the only girl in the class. The great atmosphere doesn’t dissipate once training is over. The ever growing group of women regularly hold ladies events.
Despite my short attention span the changing classes keep me motivated and in great shape. By the end of my training I’ve left everything on the mats, including all my daily stresses. I also have confidence that if I ever was in a bad situation I would have striking and grappling skills with which to defend myself.
When people meet me for the first time they are often shocked to learn that beyond the business suits and high heeled shoes lies a Muay Thai addict. The reality is it fits with any fitness level and lifestyle and if you come try a class you won’t be able to walk away either.
