How will Taekwondo benefit my child?
Every child’s needs are unique: energetic kids need an outlet; shy kids need confidence; distracted kids need focus; and wandering kids need direction. Taekwondo offers something for the needs of every child. This dynamic, fast-paced martial art originated in Korea over 2,000 years ago, and involves blocks, kicks, punches, and open-handed strikes.
Taekwondo appeals to kids because it is fun to learn. Kids in class are constantly in motion and are never bored, and many students are eager to return to class to continue building on what they have learned! They can see success in early stages of their training thanks to the structure of the sport, and this payoff builds on their confidence as they progress through the belt ranks.
Master Ken Blackburn has over 35 years of experience working with children, identifying and accommodating their needs and strengths. He infuses his instruction with the general philosophy of Taekwondo, which can be expressed through the tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, respect, self-control and indomitable spirit. Due to its numerous benefits, it is often recommended for children who are diagnosed with attention disorders; the sport is tailor made to address these, as well as a variety of other needs, because it is dynamic, high energy and exciting for kids to learn!
Little Leopards at OAMA
OAMA’s Little Leopards Taekwondo program has been specifically designed for the learning needs of children aged 3 -6. It can benefit every child – each student learns to bounce, roar, leap and become their best! From the day they are welcomed onto the training floor, each child begins learning self-discipline and socialization skills in the only children’s martial arts program of its kind in the city.
Little Leopards blends martial arts, gymnastics, balance, core strength training and coordination skills into a cohesive program. Master Ken has brought elements of this program into the junior and senior kindergarten physical education curriculum for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. A number of educators have recognized the value of the program, as children intuitively learn physical skills through specifically designed activities – though they may not realize it while they are having so much fun!
Master Ken’s students learn fun and dynamic movements, which helps develop concentration and memory. The program will also help them learn discipline, as they follow directions. They will gain the self-discipline and perseverance to keep going when they are faced with adversity, and when they learn to pick themselves up and keep trying. These qualities carry over to all other facets of their lives, and many of Master Ken’s students have seen great success on and off the training floor thanks to his guidance.
